The Plumbing Industry Registration Board offers qualified plumbers the opportunity to become Licensed Plumbers. AquaFlow Plumbing (Pty) Ltd's Henry Markus Botha is now a fully fledged licensed plumber with PIRB. But what does this mean?
PIRB's online course
A couple of months ago Henry Markus Botha (Markus) - AquaFlow Plumbing (Pty) Ltd's owner and qualified plumber joined PIRB - Plumbing Industry Registration Board - and did his first online course with them in order become a licenced plumber. The video tutorial started off with an impressive and worthy video about ethics. And the value of this is is worth mentioning; not only did the introduction emphasize the significance of ethics in the plumbing sector in South Africa but it also created a sense of belonging within a community.
The online video lasts approximately a day, with multiple tests following each tutorial focusing on COCs (Certificates of Compliance). These COCs are detailed reports, created in accordance with IOPSA standards, by a certified and licensed plumber. They serve as a declaration of the plumber's qualifications, confirming that the plumbing work completed meets the industry's standards, codes, and ethical guidelines. COCs can only be issued by the plumber who performed the work and holds the necessary qualifications.
The final test at the end of the PIRB's first course - really puts the plumber on the spot with quite complicated problem solving plumbing questions - these essentially guides and encourages the plumber to refer to SANS - South African National Standards - plumbing as much as possible.
Joining PIRB's family of registered plumbers
AquaFlow Plumbing is looking forward to undertaking further courses available on PIRB's website and meeting up with other Western Cape plumbers at their meetings.
Are COC's - Certificates of Compliance necessary?
According to SANS 1025 - In July 2022 - COC's - Certificates of Compliance were no longer necessary. This is still an ongoing debate - in a nutshell - SABS stands by that COC's are no longer a must have. However, IOPSA and PIRB standby their stance that Certificates of Compliance protects the consumer and plumbers who are credible and have ethics according to their high standards. And we agree with them.
Although SABS has decided that requirements for CoC’s will be removed from all standards for all industries, the requirement for a CoC on Solar water heater, heat pumps and grey water systems still remain in force until such time as these standards are updated. We strongly encourage all plumbers to adhere to the requirements of these standards.
And now for the lighter side to plumbing - What personality type do you think plumbers have? It has been said ...
Plumbers possess a mix of practical and investigative traits. They excel in hands-on work, enjoy problem-solving, and show social responsibility and extraversion.
